Meet Dr. Bynum


Dr. James Alton Bynum was raised in Texas where he graduated summa cum laude from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He received his medical degree with honors and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He pursued further training in sports medicine and arthroscopy through a fellowship in Plano, Texas. He has practiced orthopedics in Fort Myers since 2009.


Dr. Bynum is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with additional certification in orthopedic sports medicine. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the Florida Orthopedic Society. He has published numerous scientific papers in renowned orthopedic journals, reviewed articles for publication in the Journal of Arthroscopy, authored book chapters on arthroscopic techniques, and has lectured both students and physicians on various sports medicine and arthroscopy topics. He currently provides orthopedic coverage for multiple local high school football teams and has provided coverage for professional baseball teams, including the Boston Red Sox. He sits on the Lee Memorial Health System Medical Executive Committee and has provided orthopedic trauma coverage to all Lee county emergency rooms for the last 5 years.


Dr. Bynum enjoys fishing, hunting, kayaking, and paddle boarding. He lives in Fort Myers with his wife, Veronica.
